Blockbuster Video Store opens in Sun Valley – But not as you may remember it

January 9, 2024 by No Comments

No, it’s not 1995. However, a new Blockbuster store has just opened in Sun Valley. Having said this, it’s not as you may expect. This is the result of a project by a friendly local who created their own Blockbuster video booth which offers free DVDs and videos for the public to share. This concept has been used with books for decades and bizarrely, this concept has grown across the US with a Blockbuster twist. Here, it first started in Los Angeles meaning this is not its first location.

The new Blockbuster even had its own grand opening complete with balloons and used the iconic blue and yellow coloring of the original franchise. News of the opening was shared on Reddit by the booth’s creator, as well as the image posted below.

Blockbuster was a video rental and sales company founded in 1985 by David Cook in Dallas, Texas. It quickly became a household name, expanding to thousands of locations across the United States, Canada, and other countries. At its peak in 2004, Blockbuster had over 9,000 stores worldwide and was a dominant player in the home video rental market.

By 2010, Blockbuster had filed for bankruptcy and began closing many of its stores. In 2011, the company was bought by Dish Network, but even with their efforts, Blockbuster couldn’t compete with the convenience of online streaming services. As of 2023, there are reported to be three remaining Blockbuster stores in the US.
