Popular Grand Rapids food truck finally opens brick and mortar restaurant
The culinary landscape of Grand Rapids has been further enriched by the arrival of MIZIZI by Street Chef Shaw, a restaurant offering a unique fusion of Swahili and Latin American cuisine. Founded by Grand Rapids native Kirel Shaw, MIZIZI held its soft opening in late December 2023 to a warmly enthusiastic local community. The new location is situated at 1539 Plainfield Ave and so far it looks as though it’s business as usual for Shaw after receiving positive reviews.
Mr. Shaw, a seasoned restaurateur with a 15-year career, embarked on this culinary journey after transitioning from a different field following his college years. What initially began as a personal exploration of culinary fusion blossomed into the popular Street Chef Shaw food truck, launched in 2020. Since then, Mr. Shaw and his team have captivated palates at street corners and festivals with their innovative blend of Latin American and East African dishes.
MIZIZI’s menu presents a vibrant array of savory offerings, featuring both familiar favorites like tacos, quesadillas, and burritos alongside novel creations such as Birria ramen, coconut curry pilau bowls, and East African chapattis. Mr. Shaw takes pride in introducing the West Michigan region to this unprecedented culinary fusion, confident that MIZIZI will tantalize taste buds and leave a lasting impression.
