Final Jersey City Sears location announces permanent closure

January 7, 2024 by No Comments

The final Sears store remaining in New Jersey, located at Newport Centre in Jersey City, is slated for closure. An announcement of a store closing sale was made on the company’s Facebook page on Friday evening, January 5th, 2024. This information was further corroborated by the presence of closing-down sale signage throughout the store and confirmation through store staff.

Sears Holdings filed for bankruptcy in 2018, and the Jersey City store became the last remaining Sears in the state following the closure of the Hackensack location, a local landmark, in 2020. At present, no official date for the Jersey City store’s final day of operation has been communicated by Sears.

At this moment in time, it is not known what retail space will replace the current Sears Newport Centre location.

The number of Sears stores in the United States has significantly declined in recent years, but as of now, there are still around 12 Sears locations remaining across the country. This is a far cry from the hundreds of stores that Sears once operated, but it’s a testament to the brand’s resilience and the loyalty of its remaining customers.

Faced with competition from online retailers and big-box stores, Sears has struggled to stay competitive in terms of pricing and convenience. Additionally, the company missed out on the e-commerce boom and failed to establish itself as a major player in online retail.
