New Bubble Tea Shop opens in the Bronx – And locals are calling it gentrification
A new bubble tea shop has opened in the Bronx next door to the Opera House Hotel. It was named Boba Tea Time, its new signage was pictured yesterday, leading to a heated online debate as to whether it was good for the area or represented gentrification and a sign of the times.
To date, there are only a handful of boba tea shops dotted across the Bronx. These include the likes of Dragon Tea, Gong Cha, and Pearl Dynastea. Although bubble tea has taken much of the East Coast and New York by storm, the same cannot be said for the Bronx. Despite its population of nearly 1.5 million, you can count the amount of bubble tea stores on one hand. However, with the introduction of Boba Tea Time, this trend may be changing.
Responding to the news, a Reddit thread was made that was entitled ‘Bobaz in the hood? The Hub, Bronx.’ Here, one resident claimed that the Bronx was beginning to get gentrified while another joked that it needed a French Bistro to add to the gentrification. However, others claimed that fast food didn’t mean gentrification and that the area was still as it previously was.
Rightly or wrongly, it looks like the bubble tea trend may be starting to kick off in the Bronx which may not necessarily be a bad thing either.
