Bay Area REI store to permanently close within weeks

REI, the nation’s largest consumer cooperative for outdoor enthusiasts, confirmed that its Fremont store will permanently close on January 11, 2024. This decision comes amidst a broader reevaluation of its brick-and-mortar strategy within the Bay Area market. News of the closure was seen on a recent sign that the store left out to inform customers.

The Fremont store, operating for over a decade at 43962 Fremont Blvd., served the local community with outdoor apparel, gear, and expert advice. While the closure coincides with the ongoing trend of major retailers shuttering locations throughout the Bay Area, REI emphasizes that this specific decision is informed by internal considerations unrelated to regional economic factors.

Despite the Fremont closure, REI remains firmly committed to the Bay Area market. The company operates ten additional stores throughout the region, including locations in Sunnyvale, Dublin, Saratoga, San Carlos, and San Francisco. This robust network, further bolstered by the 2021 opening of the Sunnyvale store on the former Toys R Us site, ensures convenient access to REI’s extensive product offerings and member services for the vast majority of Bay Area residents.

The Fremont store will remain fully operational and stocked until its closing date. Members and customers are encouraged to visit the store for exceptional deals during the final weeks of operation. REI was founded in 1938 by a group of 23 adventurous climbing friends who wanted to make quality outdoor gear more accessible and affordable. Since then, REI has grown into a beloved outdoor co-op with millions of members and fans around the world.
