Out of the blue, one of Austin’s most iconic LGBTQ+ nightclubs has announced that it may be closing next year if its financial situation doesn’t improve. Yesterday, Cheer Up Charlie’s took to its Instagram page to make the announcement which gained thousands of likes and hundreds of supportive comments from the local community.

Here, the establishment claimed that it would struggle to make it to March. Aside from this, the venue also thanked its customers for years of service. While Charlie’s didn’t claim that they were certain to close, the tone of the post didn’t bode well for its future.

Specifically, the post read: ‘Cheer Ups will be 15 years in operation in March ‘24, and we really don’t know what our future will hold. Financially we need a lot more support to make it past March. But we know that times are tough for everyone and we’ll see what the cards have in store for us this next year. Whatever happens, thank you for all the support all these years. We love and appreciate all of you.’

Cheer Up Charlie’s is a popular LGBTQ+ bar and music venue located on Red River Street in Austin. Known for its cheerful atmosphere and indie sleaze vibe, Cheer Up Charlie’s has a packed event calendar featuring live music, DJs, and other performances. Because of this, it is understandable why the local LGBTQ+ community will miss it if it goes.
