Syracuse Taco Bell Cantina blocked after red-tape NIMBY’s win battle over drive-thru window

The Manlius Village Board has denied a proposal for a Taco Bell Cantina due to zoning requirements, specifically the inclusion of a drive-thru window. The Board deadlocked in a 2-2 vote on a necessary zone change, with the absent fifth member unable to break the tie.

Hospitality Restaurant Group, the developer, sought a zone change to accommodate the drive-thru, considered a critical element of the project. However, according to Trustee Hank Chapman, the C1 zoning classification, permitting drive-thrus, does not allow for stand-alone buildings, unlike the grandfathered-in Burger King.

This decision follows an earlier rejection of a different proposal from the same developer – replacing the existing fire station with a traditional Taco Bell featuring a drive-thru. Both propositions met with disapproval from Onondaga County planners and Manlius officials.

At this point in time, it is not known what the next move of Taco Bell will be and whether they will bother to fight this case or concede defeat and move on. Regardless, it looks as though those living in the Syracuse area will have to wait a little longer if they’re after a Taco Bell Cantina.

While Taco Bell Cantinas, first introduced in 2015, has gained popularity with over 60 locations nationwide, some featuring unique amenities like wedding chapels and alcoholic beverages, the drive-thru element ultimately proved incompatible with the zoning regulations in Manlius.
