Iconic Purple East store has permanently closed – And it’s been that way for a while

Yesterday, a Grand Rapids resident managed to snap a photo of the insides of the East Purple store at the Plainfield Ave location. Unfortunately for those with nostalgic views of this shop, it showed that it was completely empty. Here, a number of empty boxes remained with no remnants that such a lively store once operated out of the spot.

According to locals, the shop had been empty for the past few months. However, this has gained zero media attention since it closed. What has been documented though, is that the store was up for sale in September. It is not known whether this was completed or not. However, it has now gone. Interstingly, back in early September, Purple East made a defiant Instagram post about seeing out their 50th anniversary next year. At this point, it looks like this will not be happening. Below is the photograph showing the empty store.

Purple East was a legendary alternative lifestyle boutique and smoke shop in Grand Rapids, Michigan. It was founded in 1974, and it’s become a local institution for anyone interested in cannabis culture, art, and counterculture.

The shop sold all kinds of paraphernalia for smoking, including pipes, bongs, rolling papers, and more. It also sold a wide range of CBD and Kratom products, as well as crystals, art, clothes, and other unique items. Purple East changed ownership a few times over the years but is sadly no more.
