To many, the ‘Family Martial Arts Center’ building located at 1798 NE 42nd Ave is a regular part of the city. In fact, you could go as far as to say that it’s pretty mundane. However, an image of the pillar outside the building has recently gone viral for strange reasons.

This pillar is made to look like it’s built from marble, and apparently, it depicts the devil’s face. After a quick glance at the image, you can see why. This uses several tiles that are connected to show two menacing eyes, a mouth full of sharp teeth, and a horn on the head.

News of the face was shared on Reddit where it quickly gained attention. Here, one user claimed it looked like a chicken, while another said it looked like a female alien. This is the tendency for people to see faces or other recognizable patterns in random or abstract shapes, like clouds, rocks, or even toast. It’s a totally normal and common phenomenon, and it’s believed to be caused by our brain’s natural tendency to recognize familiar patterns and make sense of the world around us.

In this case, it looks like Portland has a new, quirky area that people have been visiting to put this theory to the test. As the saying goes, keep Portland weird.
