Yesterday, a Chattanooga resident spotted an incredibly rare cloud formation in the city skies. Such was the strange imagery of the cloud is that this had been compared to a UFO and also the scene from the cult movie Donnie Darko, where a plane falls from the sky.

News of the image was shared to Reddit where users quickly chimed in with their own views. Here, some were amazed by it, while others could barely believe it was real. it turns out that this is a very rare but natural phenomenon that can sometimes happen. However, typically the formation will only stay in place for a matter of minutes, so it can be very difficult for masses of people to see it.

A fallstreak hole, also known as a hole punch cloud, is a rare and beautiful weather phenomenon that occurs when supercooled water droplets in a cloud quickly freeze and fall to the ground, leaving a circular or elliptical hole in the cloud.

Fallstreak holes can vary in size from a few feet to several miles across, and they typically last for just a few minutes before the cloud fills in again. They’re most commonly seen in high-altitude clouds, like cirrus or cirrocumulus, and they’re most likely to occur when there’s a lot of moisture in the air and the temperature is just right for the water droplets to freeze.
