Yesterday, an image went viral on social media which highlighted just how baron the Pioneer Place mall has become. The image in question showed four stories of the mall without a soul in sight. Unsurprisingly, it also showed a number of boarded-up spaces that used to house shops. While this sight isn’t exclusive to Portland, it also highlights the death of malls across the US, which are on their deathbeds compared to the glory days of the 1980s and 1990s.

The photo below was posted to Reddit and gained nearly 300 comments. Here, most people agreed that the mall was not doing so well. However, others argued that the Raising Cane’s restaurant is still very popular. Nonetheless, this is certainly an outlier compared to other establishments in the mall. Elsewhere, others claimed that the mall’s decline was directly correlated to the success of Washington Square which took away many of the stores and subsequent trade.

One of the most unique features of Pioneer Place is its covered outdoor walkway, which features skylights and fountains, and was once a popular spot for people to relax and take in the city’s bustling energy. Pioneer Place has a rich history and has played an important role in the growth and development of downtown Portland.
