This weekend, a disgruntled customer at Washington D.C’s Dirty Habit took to the internet to criticize the fee policy of the establishment. Here, they shared a screenshot from the menu which read: ‘At Dirty Habit DC, an 18% automatic gratuity and a 4% initiative 82 fee on your bill directly contribute to our team’s fair compensation and benefits. We’re here to ensure your experience is exceptional, so please feel free to reach out to our management team with any questions – your support means the world to us.’

This certainly hasn’t been the first eatery to add a fee to their bill after Initiative 82, and probably won’t be the last. Nonetheless, this didn’t sit well with the customer who decided to photograph the fees and post them to Reddit.

Replying to this, one user claimed that the gratuity fee wasn’t automatic as they wrote: “An automatic gratuity isn’t a service fee. It’s an automatic gratuity. You don’t have to tip now.” However, this clashes with the wording used by Dirty Habit which literally claims this fee is automatic.

Interestingly, Washington residents have since created a large spreadsheet that handily notes each restaurant in relation to their added fees and after looking at this, Dirty Habit is certainly not alone.
