Health officials are investigating a norovirus outbreak connected to a promotional event at a local restaurant.

Northwestern University students reportedly experienced gastrointestinal distress after attending a ‘$1 Burrito’ event held last Saturday at Big Wig Tacos & Burritos between 1 pm and 8 pm. The Evanston Health and Human Services Department launched an investigation following complaints from students about symptoms such as stomach cramps, vomiting, and diarrhea. Of course, the danger is that this could spread far beyond University students.

“We immediately initiated a comprehensive inspection of the food establishment,” the department stated in a press release. Big Wig Tacos has collaborated fully with the investigation. The investigation is still ongoing. At the same time, the link between the food and the virus has not yet been confirmed.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), norovirus is a highly contagious virus that can cause vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, and stomach cramps. The CDC recommends thorough hand washing and proper fruit and vegetable rinsing as preventive measures. At this point in time, it is not known how many people are said to be infected. Nonetheless, the fact that the The Evanston Health and Human Services Department has launched an investigation hints that this has been taken seriously.
