These weird eyes have appeared all over Syracuse – Here’s what they mean
If you’ve lived in Syracuse for the past few years then you may have noticed a large amount of graffiti depicting one-eyed monsters. These are located all around the city and in surrounding areas. To date, there are easily hundreds of them. According to some people, there have even been thousands of these eyes painted around the city. However, the exact number is not known and many will have been removed by the city.
It turns out that these divisive drawings are the work of a local street artist named ‘Vacant’. Due to the iconic status of the artist, an Instagram account has even been made that highlights their graffiti around Syracuse.
Throughout their years of work, the enigmatic graffiti artist known as Vacant has chosen to remain anonymous, preserving their mystique. Their clandestine activities, while technically illegal and punishable by up to a year in jail, have transformed the urban landscape of Syracuse and surrounding areas. Because of this, Vacant has also gained many admirers over the years.
Syracuse serves as Vacant’s artistic hub, but their captivating eyes can be spotted in Cortland, Binghamton, Geneva, Canandaigua, and even nestled amidst the Adirondacks. Vacant’s artistic journey began in 2010, leaving an indelible mark on Syracuse’s historic buildings, including the former Addis Department Store. For now at least, it looks like Vacant isn’t going anywhere.
