Iconic Chinatown Bar closes down – Citing rising crime as the main reason

November 20, 2023 by No Comments

Yesterday, Chinatown’s Bar Deco announced it had closed for good. This rather abrupt announcement was made on their Instagram page where the bar and eatery said: ‘It is with a heavy heart that we have decided to close our doors permanently today, 11/19. Being a part of this vibrant & thriving community since 2015 has truly been an honor. We cannot thank our dedicated staff & loyal patrons enough for the last 8 years of incredible memories.’

As well as this, the owner went on to claim that the main reason for its closure was due to rising crime in the area. Overall, it has been a tough year for Washington D.C.’s Chinatown businesses due to other issues such as rising rents also affecting businesses.

Because of this, it begs the question of whether Chinatown will maintain its usual charm and character with such a big venue leaving. Hopefully, this is more of a one-off blip as opposed to something triggering a domino effect.

Over the years, Bar Deco was a hit with the locals due to offering craft cocktails and elevated bar food in an industrial setting. At this point in time, it is not known what will replace the bar, or whether the owner of Bar Deco will choose to relocate elsewhere in the near future.
