Iconic Portland Jazz Club permanently shuts after money struggles

The 1905, a jazz club in North Portland, has permanently closed its doors.

Aaron Barnes, the owner of the club, delivered the news on Thursday evening through a message to the venue’s newsletter subscribers and Instagram followers. He expressed that despite earnest efforts to navigate challenges, sustaining the club’s operation was no longer feasible.

There won’t be any farewell shows or events to mark the closure. The abrupt end of the 1905 may not come as a surprise to those who have been tracking the venue’s recent difficulties. In some ways, it’s been surprising that it lasted this long.

The closure sent a wave of disappointment through Portland’s jazz scene, particularly affecting musicians who had gigs lined up at the 1905. Shortly after the initial announcement, Barnes sent a follow-up email, kindling a glimmer of hope.

He urged for contributions to a GoFundMe campaign launched in July, which aimed to collect $100,000 to save the club. Following this appeal, there was a surge in donations from supporters and artists, pushing the fundraiser beyond $67,000 at the time of this report. Additionally, the club’s social media pages were flooded with comments from a community grappling with frustration and confusion.

Ultimately, on Wednesday night, Barnes made the tough decision to shut down the 1905 once again.
