This week, a new Astoria coffee shop quietly opened. Named Mokafe, this venue offers freshly sourced coffee from Yemen which is known for offering some of the best coffee in the world. Part of this is because the culture and tradition surrounding coffee in Yemen are strong. The country has been growing coffee for centuries, and they take great pride in their coffee production. This attention to detail and care for the craft creates a high-quality product.

Located at 25-73 Steinway near Little Egypt, this is due for its grand opening which will take place tomorrow (Friday). Although this may taste good, it will also face stiff competition, as Astoria already has a large coffee scene that includes a mixture of local and chain stores that are already established.

However, it’s a case of so far, so good as its product is certainly up there with the best of them while the interiors also offer contemporary, yet cozy vibes which you may expect with most coffee shops. Mokafe replaces Le Luxe Beautique which previously hosted the spot.

Typically with Yemeni coffee, the beans are cultivated in mountainous regions, where the high altitude and cooler temperatures create optimal growing conditions. This results in beans that have a complex, full-bodied flavor.
