Popular Des Moines McDonald’s abruptly closes for good

One of Des Moines’s most popular McDonald’s restaurants has closed suddenly. The store in question was located a 86th Street in Urbandale and shut its doors for good starting this week. News of the closure first emerged on the Urbandale Nextdoor app. Here, locals quickly spread the news that the site was shuttered with no signs of life.

Not only this but since then, the official Google profile has also changed to display ‘permanently closed’. Often, due to the sheer size of McDonald’s as a corporation, they very rarely announce closures or openings online. In short, this closure is nothing out of the ordinary.

According to the gossip on Nextdoor, locals claimed the location closed due to a steep rise in rent which forced the owner to shut up shop. Unlike most McDonald’s restaurants, it is believed that this plot of land was not owned by the corporation, who instead leased it from a private vendor. According to this website, there are still 173 McDonald’s restaurants in Iowa.

This particular location was one of the oldest in the state and dated back decades. Because of this, it’s fair to say that it was more than just a McDonald’s and may have held sentimental value to locals. At this point in time, it is not known what will replace the establishment.
