Iconic Bay Area Diner to close after 49 years of business

Hobee’s Restaurants, famous for its world-famous coffeecake, is set to permanently close its flagship location in Mountain View after 49 years of operation.

Located at 2312 Central Expressway, the Mountain View outlet of Hobee’s will cease operations after the Thanksgiving weekend, as announced in a Facebook post by the business on Tuesday. The decision to close was attributed to infrastructure challenges faced by the establishment.

This closure signifies the end of a significant chapter for Hobee’s. The company had initially planned to celebrate the 50th anniversary of its Mountain View location next year, but these plans will no longer come to fruition due to the impending closure.

This follows the earlier closure of another Hobee’s branch in San Jose at 680 River Oaks Parkway, which shut down in February 2022 after 28 years. The San Jose location had reportedly struggled to regain its lunchtime clientele, which had dwindled during the pandemic.

In spite of these closures, Hobee’s is looking forward to new beginnings with the planned opening of a new location in downtown San Jose. The upcoming restaurant, situated at 261 N. 2nd St. in San Jose, is expected to open before the end of this year. Hobee’s first revealed its intentions to launch this new outlet in June. However, somethings are historic and simply can’t be replaced.
