City of New Orleans to remove homeless encampments this Friday

Recently, a flyer went viral on social media which showed a closure notice. This city notice claimed that on 7 AM on Friday, November 17th, the homeless encampments on Tchoup near the convention camp would be cleared.

The flyer continued to claim that alternative accommodation would be offered and for people to take their belongings with them. At this moment in time, these encampments are some of the biggest in the city. The image below was first uploaded to Reddit, which prompted a discussion on the nature of encampments in New Orleans.

Here, one user claimed: “Glad to see this. It’s really become pretty out of hand. I hope these people have good places to go…But they have absolutely desecrated one of our major Highway exits (especially for tourism). Just last week there was an angry man on the corner trying to confront every single driver yelling angrily into every window and then throwing a brick at a random car. Nope nope nope.”

Unfortunately, many New Orleans residents had a rather cynical take on the camp’s closure. This is because they claimed that often, camps would re-emerge elsewhere within days anyway. Because of this, it will be interesting to see whether this policy actually works or whether it’s merely a temporary stop-gap without actually being effective.
