Portland Donut shop updates free donut birthday policy due to abusive customers

One of Portland’s best-known donut shops recently updated its policy regarding free donuts for people on their birthday. For years, Pips have proudly given away 12 free donuts on people’s birthday. Recently, this policy has been gamed by unscrupulous customers. Because of this, there are now stricter rules in place to prevent more issues in the future.

Writing on Instagram Pips claimed: ‘Hello, some important but ( sadly) necessary changes to our free birthday dozen guidelines: On Your Actual Birthday Only. 18 Or Older Must Show ID. Under 18 When Accompanied By A Parent or Guardian. We Cannot Accompany ANY Exceptions To This Generous Gift.’

The post then went on to claim that certain customers had ‘A shocking level of entitlement, arrogance and verbal abuse towards us if people don’t get a dozen free donuts.’

While these new rules may seem stricter, it also highlights the lows of certain customers which has forced the hands of Pips. To give away 12 free donuts in the first place is incredibly generous but it looks as though some people have taken advantage of this offer.

Known for its delicious doughnuts and tasty chai drinks, Pips has two locations in the city – one on NE Fremont Street and one on SW Broadway Street – and they’re open 7 days a week, serving up a wide variety of doughnuts, including seasonal flavors and classic favorites.
