New Hawaiian Shaved Ice Shops opens in Bay Area

Ululani’s Hawaiian Shave Ice, a renowned shave ice chain originating from Maui, just launched its first Bay Area outlet this Saturday in Livermore.

The franchise was being opened by Monica Shiu, a resident of Livermore, along with her husband Allen Shiu. Monica’s affinity for Ululani’s began during a trip to Maui, a journey that coincided with a challenging period in her life marked by the loss of her mother in 2021 and her father’s cancer diagnosis.

Both Monica and Allen, who are registered nurses, underwent training in Maui to gear up for their new venture. There, they learned the art of creating Ululani’s signature ultrafine shave ice and syrups, which are renowned for their use of local ingredients and pure cane sugar. The couple’s youngest daughter will also be part of the team at the shop.

The Livermore franchise marks the third Ululani’s location in California, following the openings in Stockton in July and in Hollywood in 2022. Additionally, the chain has expanded to Round Rock, Texas. Shaved ice, also known as snow cones or Hawaiian shave ice, is a classic summer treat. This typically uses finely shaved ice that’s flavored with a variety of syrups, typically fruity flavors like cherry, lemon, strawberry, and pineapple. It’s often served in a cone or cup, with a variety of toppings like sweetened condensed milk, chocolate syrup, or colorful sprinkles.

Ululani’s Hawaiian Shave Ice is located at 3016 W. Jack London Blvd., Livermore, and will be open daily from noon to 8 p.m.
