Beloved Eatery to close after 7 years of business – But it may be returning as a new format

Marjie’s Grill in Mid-City, known for its unique fusion of Deep South and Southeast Asian flavors, is undergoing a transformation to adapt to the changing economic landscape in the restaurant industry.

The establishment has chosen December 20, coinciding with its seventh anniversary, as the final day for its regular operations this year. Co-founders Marcus Jacobs and Caitlin Carney have announced plans to relaunch Marjie’s Grill in early 2024, adopting a new business strategy.

Despite gradual price increases to offset rising costs, the founders recognize a limit to how much they can charge while maintaining the original vision of Marjie’s Grill as an accessible dining spot.

The restaurant’s shift is a response to the escalating expenses that many New Orleans eateries are facing, further strained by a particularly slow summer, described by many as one of the worst in recent industry history. These challenges have been compounded by ongoing economic shifts since the pandemic.

When Marjie’s Grill reopens next year, it will primarily operate as an event space and catering service. Additionally, the restaurant is exploring the possibility of offering an exclusive dinner service on select evenings, based on a reservation-only, set-menu format reminiscent of a supper club.

With this said, it may be the end of Marjie’s as we know it. However, hopefully it will return better than ever.
