Iconic Portland pub to close after debt troubles

The Portland brewing industry has faced significant challenges over recent years, and the unexpected sale of Ecliptic Brewing is the latest blow. Ecliptic, established by one of Oregon’s most respected brewing veterans, revealed its acquisition today. John Harris, an industry stalwart with roots in Deschutes and Full Sail breweries, will remain with the brand post-sale, although the business will not continue operating its current location as a public house.

Ecliptic Brewing is the most recent in a series of Oregon breweries to undergo major transitions, from changes in ownership to outright closures. News of the sale was first broken on its Instagram page, where it cited selling the property to pay off outstanding debts.

This past July, Hillsboro’s Ambacht Brewing, famed for its unique matzo beer, decided to cease operations. Following that, in late August, Laurelwood Brewing shut down its last pub situated on Northeast Sandy Boulevard.

The brewing sector’s volatility is felt statewide, stretching from Medford’s Opposition Brewing, which in early August declared it would be closing down after 11 years, to Grants Pass, where Climate City Brewing ended its restaurant operations in September, albeit with hopes of reopening. Furthermore, Ordnance Brewing in Boardman communicated its permanent closure in mid-August.

Patrons have until November 18 to visit the pub. Take the opportunity to enjoy a final pint or perhaps to toast in farewell.
