Iconic Cincinnati diner to permanently close after 68 years of business

Hathaway’s Diner, a culinary establishment with a history spanning 68 years in the heart of Cincinnati, has declared its closure. Through a post on its Facebook page, the eatery, which first opened its doors in 1956, informed patrons that it would cease operations.

Here, it said: “I am very sad to report that starting tomorrow. That Hathaway’s diner will no longer be open. Very sad day for me personally. Between the city with all the food trucks. Plus not as many people working downtown. It just killed our business. Wish I could do something to change it but it’s just not possible. We loved serving the people of Cincinnati for 68 years. Ten years ourselves. Thanks and love to all of you.”

This status gained over 1,000 likes and hundreds of comments, with a number of Cincinnati residents paying their respects to this classic diner. Interestingly, the diner also commented on its own status and explained: “Well, there is a conflict of interest when the city is the one competing against you. Where there is 3cdc there are no food trucks. But we do not pay 7 percent of our gross to 3cdc so in return we get all the food trucks competing against us all summer. But 3cdc is taking over our area so now that they want us gone the food trucks will stop. Reminds me of the old Mafia days. Pay up or get out.”

With this said, it looks as though Hathaway’s isn’t best pleased with the city and their handling of local food trucks. At this moment in time, it is not known what will happen to the iconic venue in the future.
