San Diego residents baffled after finding out that abandoned cars take months to be removed by city

Earlier today, it was revealed on social media that if a vehicle in San Diego is abandoned, the allotted time for it to get dealt with is 45-60 days. This was found by a San Diego sleuth who found the issue on the city website. Here, it said: ‘Vehicles parked over 72 hours – Please allow 45-60 days to be addressed.’

Clearly, this is a lot longer than you may expect. In theory, this means that if a car is parked in front of your house, it could take 60 days for the city to address it. Similarly, the wording doesn’t mention removing said vehicles either, as the term ‘addressed’ is naturally quite ambiguous. More information can be found here.

News of this quickly spread on Reddit, which created over 100 comments in response to the speed of dealing with abandoned vehicles. Here, one user wrote: “A waste of time. I had a vehicle parked on my street with a flat tire, cobwebs, and a windshield covered in leaves: it took 4 months for the city to tow it away after reporting it on Get It Done. Jesus Christ.”

If correct, then this confirms the theory that the initial 60-day period doesn’t even count for a potential removal. With this in mind, it may be more of a case of hoping you don’t fall foul to an abandoned vehicle rather than relying on the local government to deal with it.
