Massive delivery truck crashes into infamous ‘can opener’ bridge

Yesterday, a large delivery truck fell foul to an infamous Indianapolis bridge and got its top shaved off as a result. The bridge in question is based on South Rural off Washington. As seen, the front of the truck got damaged.

Luckily for the driver, they stopped quickly, as this could have led to the entire roof of the van being removed had they tried to proceed. In a rather ironic twist, the truck also had ‘Gentle ride van’ written on its side. In this case, it certainly wasn’t a gentle ride. Often, these bridges are referred to as can-openers due to their ability to open the top of vans and trucks, like a can opener would when accessing canned foods.

The image was originally posted to Reddit, which prompted a discussion surrounding the context of the crash. Here, one local truck driver wrote: “I know this bridge quite well as a box truck owner. Obviously, the homeless man who screams at trucks to turn around was passed out today.” If you know this bridge then you will know the homeless man in question, who may have saved the truck driver a lot of bother if they were near.

Bizarrely, the average box sized Uhaul is typically around 9’7″, and this bridge is listed as having a height of 10’3″. This goes to show that sometimes, your luck just isn’t in.
