Kim Reynolds blasted over Iowa tax rate boasts

Yesterday, Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds took to her personal Twitter account to boast about Iowa’s tax rate. Here, she said: ‘Iowa will go from the 6th highest tax rate to the 4th lowest. And I promise, we aren’t stopping there!’ Although Reynolds clearly saw this shift as a positive, not everyone agreed. In fact, her announcement garnered 169 responses, with many of them blasting the governor for her claims.

Here, some argued that higher tax rates weren’t necessarily a bad thing because with lower taxes came lower public services. As always with politics, a lot depends on your personal preference. This comes as Reynolds’s approval rating has dipped recently.

Here, one user named Laura Abney replied: “You have cut funding to schools, SNAP, etc. All the programs that help Iowans. But you feel you can use Covid relief money to send our troopers to the border for your political stunts. Tax cuts benefitted your Big Ag and Ethanal donors. Small family farms are going bankrupt.”

Similarly, another constituent wrote: “Exactly who have your tax cuts benefitted? Lists and details, please, not sweeping generalizations. Your “fiscal responsibility” consists of cutting funds to education, health care access, infrastructure, environment…in short, you fund your friends here in Iowa and in Texas.”

These were just a few of the replies which followed a similar theme. Clearly, not everyone agreed that tax cuts were beneficial to Iowa, with many arguing her cuts had gone too far.
