Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer was recently criticized after claiming Michigan’s ‘economic momentum is building’ after making a speech about the financial status of her state. Making such ambitious statements was always going to draw heat from critics, especially when her words weren’t backed by numbers or facts. Because of this, critics of Whitmer challenged her views and called her out over this.

On Twitter, she wrote: ‘In Michigan, we compete to win. Our economic momentum is building as we secure projects, investments, and jobs across the state. Let’s keep working to harness Michigan’s extraordinary potential, so we can grow our economy and make a real difference in people’s lives.’

Responding to this, one user replied: “Great job Madam Whitmer! Michigan has the highest insurance rates, 3000% over the national average. Ranked 8th in states with the highest violent crime rates. We had the 13th highest property taxes in 2020. Michigan fell from 32nd in 2019 to 43rd in fourth grade reading scores.”

Similarly, another user named John Wenger wrote: “How? More tax and more expenses?” Clearly, this shows a difference in how Whitmer measures success compared to many of her constituents. It also shows that despite using buzzwords, not everyone always agrees when politicians say certain things. With this in mind, it will be interesting to see how the rest of Whitmer’s governance plays out.
