The former Kmart store in south Minneapolis is nearing its end. After decades, Nicollet Avenue in Minneapolis will soon be reconnected, a development that has been eagerly anticipated by many in the community. Andrea Jenkins, the city council president, is optimistic that this transformation will revitalize the area.

The establishment of the shopping complex in the 1970s was met with resistance. Not long after its construction, residents voiced concerns about the building dividing their community and obstructing a significant route in south Minneapolis. These days, the Kmart store is in a state of disarray and has been for some time. For a while now, it has been covered in graffiti which is somewhat symbolic of its status within the community.

Over the years, multiple city administrations engaged in intricate negotiations to purchase the building and its lease from a trio of partners. Demolition of the building is set to commence on Nov. 6, an expedited date due to a recent significant fire at the site.

The investigation into the fire’s origins has concluded without any criminal charges, as the results were indeterminate. Plans are in place to construct a new road through the existing shopping center by 2025. As preparations are underway, the city is seeking input from residents regarding potential businesses along the new road. Until Nov. 15, community members can provide feedback on proposed road layouts and public space designs.
