Kay Ivey challenged over tax rebates comments

Alabama Governor Kay Ivey was recently challenged over her comments regarding the introduction of one-time tax rebates for Alabamans. On her personal Twitter account, Ivey wrote: ‘One-time rebates will be on the way to our Alabama taxpayers in time for the holidays. Our country is in the midst of tough times, and Alabama families need relief. I’m proud of our efforts to put money back in the hands of our people. #alpolitics’

On the face of it, this may sound like positive news. However, a lot of people saw through this statement and used the replies section to criticize Ivey. As ever in politics, nothing is as straightforward as it seems.

Responding to Ivey, a Twitter user named Jim Moore said: “You claim we have a budget surplus but still label public schools as “failing.” There is no surplus you simply aren’t using the funds properly.” Overall, it’s hard to disagree with his sentiments and Ivey’s stance doesn’t make much sense when putting the two together.

Elsewhere, a user named Ensley Pratt wrote: “So when the Federal government gives back money You call it Corporate handouts or welfare But when Alabama does it just appreciate it. Republicans are the biggest hypocrites ever.”

Clearly, the blue side of the state wasn’t particularly impressed with Ivey’s stance on the tax rebate and let their feelings be known.
