Iconic Des Moines Pizzaria to re-open for two weeks in November

From 1963 to 1986, if you grew up in the Des Moines area, you likely visited a modest green building situated at the intersection of Army Post Road and Fleur Drive. Pizza, having been introduced to Des Moines in the late ’40s, gained popularity by the ’50s. Establishments like Chuck’s in Highland Park and Babe’s in downtown Des Moines turned pizza into a go-to choice for evenings out. However, on the southside, the primary attraction near the airport was this particular spot, renowned for its pizza and lively atmosphere.

Now, the iconic pizza that Bamie popularized is experiencing a revival. Until Nov. 15, Bamie’s Pizza will be featured at Gusto Pizza Bar on Ingersoll Avenue in Des Moines. For a fortnight, patrons can choose from four versions of the signature thin-crust pizza, characterized by its slender raised edge.

Ron Bonanno, Bamie’s son, and Ann Bonanno have inherited the cherished family recipes and are keen to offer Des Moines a taste of the past. They’re committed to preserving the authenticity, from preparing the dough to the specific manner in which they grate their mozzarella cheese. To facilitate this nostalgic return, Gusto is providing its team, baking facilities, and venue to recreate Bamie’s magic.

Bamie’s will operate from 3 to 9 p.m. from Monday to Thursday, 3 to 11 p.m. on Friday, 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday. It will be located at 2301 Ingersoll Ave., Des Moines.
