Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves recently made comments surrounding gendered sports in the state. Here, he signed a document to call on the NCAA to keep transgendered athletes out of biological women’s sports. Regardless of your thoughts on this matter, this caused a backlash with many claiming that Reeves used this as a smokescreen and distraction tactic due to the upcoming election which could lose him his job.

On Twitter, Reeves photographed the document (complete with his signature) as well as writing: ‘Boys should play boys’ sports and girls should play girls’ sports. It’s pretty simple really, but some just don’t get it. We need to preserve fairness and competition for all athletes. That’s why I joined governors across the country in calling on the NCAA to protect women.’

Responding to his thoughts, many Mississippians had their say. One user named Kareem called this a ‘neat distraction’ and quipped: ‘Neat distraction with the sports talk, but maybe we should huddle about that $1.4 billion playbook you’re running with your campaign donors instead.’

Another user named Deshon Walker added: ‘Eliminate grocery tax, higher teacher pay from year one! No teacher should have to wait 15 years to be paid 41K a years, fix our health care systems! Let’s focus on the real issues in our state’

Interestingly, a lot of people shared similar beliefs. Clearly, a lot of people didn’t buy into Reeves’s point and believed that in Mississippi, there are more pressing issues. Interestingly, this could lead to Reeves getting voted out if enough people think this way, so it will be an intriguing next few days ahead.
