New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham recently got into hot water over controversial comments made on her Twitter account. Here, she complimented women in political positions. This statement gained over 200 comments, with many of them quick to lambast the governor.

Here, she wrote: ‘The power of female Democratic governors isn’t just in our leadership — it’s in our unity, support and friendship. From navigating crises to picking out wedding outfits, we’ve got each other’s backs. Let’s keep paving the way for more #womeninpolitics.’

Of the many replies, one user wrote: ‘How about more qualified people in politics? A person’s race or gender should not be a factor in selection. Just pick the best candidate.’ This followed a similar theme in the comments, with many upset regarding her comments based on gender tokenism.

Another constituent named Daryl commented: ‘I’m down.. now please resign and allow someone who is competent to run the state. I don’t care what race, sex, religion, age or alphabet they identify with. Just get us back to competent leadership. That starts with YOU (MLG) resigning.’

Based on these (and many more comments), it looks like the New Mexico governor’s positive spin on gender did not go down well at all and can be considered a bit of a public relations disaster regarding the public backlash.
