Iconic Brooklyn Brewery to permanently close next week

After nearly ten years on Surf Avenue, Brooklyn’s Coney Island Brewery is shutting down its sole taproom.

The brewery revealed that it would conclude its operations on November 9, citing in an Instagram announcement that they’ve ‘made the difficult business choice’ to close the taproom. However, the beer will still be produced and available at local restaurants, bars, and stores. The statement also thanked customers for their years of loyalty.

The decision to close is attributed to financial challenges. The brewery pointed out that the ‘seasonal nature of the location’ — being situated close to Maimonides Park and Luna Park — combined with the high operational costs of the taproom, made it unprofitable for ‘several years.’ They also mentioned not foreseeing a profitable future for the space. This highlights just how difficult it can be to run a successful brewery.

Coney Island Brewing Company was established in 2007 and was acquired by Boston Beer Company in 2013. The taproom was inaugurated in 2015 and underwent expansion in 2019 to accommodate more guests and facilitate events.

The announcement took many fans by surprise, leading to reactions of shock and sadness. Comments poured in with sentiments like ‘devastated’ and ‘absolutely heartbroken.’ One individual expressed profound sorrow, noting the brewery had been a personal haven of ‘comfort, refuge, and camaraderie.’ At this point in time, it is not known what will replace the brewery.
