If you’ve ever traveled on Southwest 119th and Western near Moore then you may have come across Tom the Turkey. Over the last few months, this Turkey made the location his home and was known for walking in between vehicles without a care in the world.

Yesterday, it was confirmed that Tom had died after being struck by a vehicle. Based on the lifestyle of the bird, it’s not too surprising. Nonetheless, his death was still met with sadness by the Oklahoma community, as he had become a local mascot over the years. Not only that but despite living among the traffic, Tom had also learned to navigate it quite well. Clearly, he wasn’t your average bird and brought a smile to everyone’s day that he came across.

News of his death first broke on Reddit, where a number of Oklahomans paid their respect. Here, one local even claimed to have been blocked by the bird on Friday, while others claimed that he should have been rescued by the authorities a long time ago.

All novelty aside, it is a little sad that a wild bird was allowed to roam a busy junction for so long without anyone taking him to a relevant sanctuary. This is even more puzzling considering the amount of attention the bird gained on social media over the past few months. Regardless, Tom has since gone to bird heaven and will dearly be missed by those who drove past him.
