Local fury as Bandelier National Monument closed due to vandalism

Over the weekend, part of the Bandelier National Monument was closed down to vandalism. This was shown by a newly erected sign that said ‘closed due to vandalism’, as well as a wooden board that may have been placed to stop people from climbing on the monument.

As you may imagine, New Mexico residents weren’t very pleased to see this sign as it showed that someone had caused major disrespect to a historical site in the area. Similarly, it’s never nice when a public attraction is closed off due to the selfishness of others.

The image below was originally uploaded to Reddit which garnered a fearsome response. On Facebook, images of the vandalism also circulated, which showed people had scribbled on the petroglyphs. Unfortunately, it seems that some people are incapable of respecting history or culture.

The Bandelier National Monument is a park located in New Mexico that preserves ancient Puebloan cliff dwellings, petroglyphs, and other cultural artifacts. It’s known for its incredible views of the mesa and canyons, as well as its rich history and cultural significance.

One of the park’s highlights is the Tsankawi Unit, which features an impressive cliff dwelling and a trail that takes visitors through a series of narrow canyons and rocky overlooks. Unfortunately, the Tsankawi Unit has been closed since 2019 due to construction delays, but the park remains open to visitors for hiking, picnicking, and cultural exploration. It’s a must-visit destination for anyone interested in history, nature, and cultural heritage.
