Iconic Firestorm Cafe Mural finally removed as new venue takes place

Yesterday marked a sad day for art lovers of Asheville. This is because Firestorm Cafe’s ex-mural was completely painted over. The mural was originally created in 2015 by artist Austin Mikulka. The mural included a number of animals, such as a skunk, frog, and sad-looking bear. Now, over 8 years later they are gone.

Now located at 1022 Haywood Road, Firestorm is still thriving and is doing better than ever. This worker-owned business is a community space that offers coffee and books. Known for its quirky taste, this mural matched its previous owners perfectly. However, they moved quite some time ago, albeit the mural stayed in place beyond its welcome.

News of the mural leaving was first posted on Reddit, which had quite a lot of responses and clearly, this mural was very popular. A number of locals then speculated what could be replacing the venue and right now, it is unknown. Jokingly, one user even quipped that it could be another Sheetz store which would be ironic but also likely considering the chain’s recent success.

Based on its strategic location, it could even be a brewery. However, at this point, this is pure speculation. Regardless of what occupies the building, it’s fair to say that its artwork won’t be as popular as the mural it replaced.
