Laura Kelly challenged over pro-Medicaid claims

Kansas Governor Laura Kelly was recently challenged over her claims that Medicaid would benefit the state. Here, she claimed that Medicaid would lead to tax cuts instead of raises. According to Kelly, this would be doable by saving money on other services through the benefits of Medicaid. Understandably, not everyone agreed with her stance on this position and questioned her claims.

On her personal Twitter account, Kelly put this idea forward and claimed: ‘Busting Medicaid Myths: Medicaid expansion will raise taxes for hardworking Kansans. Kansans could actually see tax CUTS because of expansion. States like Arkansas have been able to use the money they saved on other essential services to cut state income taxes.’

Responding to Kelly, one constituent replied: “Well that would be fantastic. As a Kansan, I love paying ridiculously high Sales Tax, Property Tax, and Income tax. All you do is find ways to tax us more. Then your pals in DC come on for their cut of my hard-earned money. All you politicians do is spin one lie after another.”

Similarly, another user claimed: “Are you actually going to say with a straight face that my taxes will go down if you somehow get Medicaid expansion passed? This is next-level gaslighting.”

Even if Governor Kelly’s claims were completely truthful, this is a good example of how you should back up ideas with research and numbers, rather than playing up the positives.
