Huge Mexican Food Hall to open in Costa Mesa next month

Northgate, a grocery chain, is embracing a marketplace style reminiscent of Mexico by introducing Mercado Gonzalez. This vibrant space will feature over 20 stalls, offering a range of food options. Notable inclusions are the renowned El Moro churro stand from Mexico City, Carnitas Don Miguel’s carnitas, Chiva Torta’s tortas, and Tacos Los Guichos’ tacos, available throughout the day.

Situated in Northgate’s new establishment in Costa Mesa, this food hall is inspired by renowned markets like Mercado Juarez in Monterrey, Mercado de Abastos in Guadalajara, and Mercado de Aretesanias in Oaxaca. Slated to open next month, the venue will also accommodate the upscale restaurant Maizano and the cocktail bar Entre Nos, both ventures of Javier Hernandez Pons and Jorge Salim, the minds behind LA Cha Cha Chá and Loreto.

Mirroring Mexican markets, the centerpiece of Mercado Gonzalez will be its butcher shop, tortilleria, cheese expert, produce stalls, specialty items, and other artisanal products typical in Mexico. This design cleverly reimagines the conventional American supermarket setup, integrating the accessibility and charm of a Mexican market. The inaugural Northgate market was established in 1980 in Anaheim under the name Northgate González Market, and its ownership now spans three generations across 13 family members.

Beyond the food stalls in Mercado Gonzalez, a community kitchen will be available to nurture local entrepreneurs and budding chefs, aiding them in mastering the trade and building a clientele. Patrons can also look forward to indoor and outdoor dining areas, a selection of beverages including aguas frescas, beer, wine, tequilas, and mezcal, as well as pastries and desserts. The ambiance will be further enhanced with live music.

Given the rising trend of food halls in Southern California and the significant Latinx population, this venture promises to be a hit. Essentially, it’s a brilliant fusion of the grocery store and food hall concept, echoing the authentic ambiance of Mexican markets. It’s hopeful that Northgate and similar Mexican supermarkets will replicate this model in other parts of Southern California. Mercado Gonzalez’s address is 2300 Harbor Boulevard, Costa Mesa, CA.
