Greg Abbott criticized for kid’s education funding comments

This weekend, Texas Governor Greg Abbott got into a spot of bother over comments that he made regarding kid’s education and funding in Texas. Here, Abbott encouraged Texan parents to create Education Savings Accounts (ESAs) which would allow funds to be put into specific areas of their kid’s education. While this in isolation isn’t a bad idea, it bought up replies surrounding his policies on education which aren’t as positive for Texan school kids.

Here, he wrote: ‘Education Savings Accounts (ESAs) allow parents to customize their child’s education based on their unique learning needs. School choice isn’t just about putting kids in the school that’s best for them. It’s about giving parents the freedom to help their children thrive.’

Replying to this, a user named Alex Keaton wrote: “Governor, we already have school choice! If TX were prioritizing public education and our students, it would fund TX schools with the $500M you are wanting to give to charter & private schools, neither of which are required to meet the State’s academic accountability standards!”

User Roman Orosco also added: “Stealing tax money for richer families can be called vouchers, ESAs, parents choice or anything else, it is still subsidizing rich people’s education. Put it on a ballot for all Texans to vote on to see what Texans want.”

Overall, Abbott’s original statement generated over 230 responses, with many of them in a similar vain. Clearly, people weren’t impressed with his funding for private education and didn’t really buy into the power of ESAs.
