Downtown Walgreens to permanently close next month

The Walgreens in downtown Hoboken is officially closing its doors on November 7th, leaving many residents and visitors to the area scratching their heads. This closure comes as part of a larger downsizing effort by Walgreens, which announced earlier this year that it would be shutting down 150 stores across the country.

While the details behind this decision are still unclear, it’s been confirmed by a Walgreens spokesman who said ‘Our location at 101-105 Washington St., in Hoboken, will indeed close on November 7th.’ The closure is a blow to the community, as this Walgreens had been a staple in downtown Hoboken for many years. It’s certainly a loss for the neighborhood and its closure may inconvenience locals who were dependent on it for medical supplies.

Typically, this leads to Walgreens diverting their customers to their nearest store. Thankfully, there are still other locations in Hoboken however, this may not be too easy to navigate if you’re elderly, disabled, or can’t travel. Sometimes, these closures also feature heavily discounted items in the build-up to the final day, in order to rid the store of its lingering stock. At this point in time, it is not known what will replace this particular Walgreens space. Nonetheless, it’s fair to say that it’s quite a sizeable chunk of real estate that could be put to good use, especially considering it’s enviable aesthetic.
