A San Jose restaurant has recently been put on blast due to adding a 4% surcharge on to their bill to ‘defray the rising cost of business, including an increase in minimum wage.’ An image of the receipt went viral on social media, where many users weren’t too pleased with the additional fee. The establishment in question was the EMC Seafood and Raw Bar which is located at Santana Row.

Here, an angry customer uploaded the image to Reddit and gave their thoughts on the controversial surcharge. The image of the receipt can be seen in further detail below.

The frustrated customer vented, writing: “Another example of service fees and tipping getting out of control in the US, not just Bay Area. The food and service were great, but won’t be going back anymore. Ended up tipping 20% on top of the service fee, but wasn’t happy doing it. Felt bad for the staff. Businesses – Either incorporate the fees into the menu prices or lower your margins and pay your staff more. It’s unreasonable to expect patrons to fund your labor wages through service fees. I wonder if all these service fees are going to the staff.”

Although this may serve as frustration to San Jose locals, these fees may be short-lived. This is because Governor Gavin Newsom recently wrote into law that restaurants would have to be more up-front about their fees when presenting food.
