New Independent Bookstore opens in Seattle

October 23, 2023 by No Comments

A recently established independent bookstore in the heart of the Chinatown International District marked its grand debut with a festive launch event this past weekend. While new bookshops have been cropping up in Seattle more frequently post-pandemic, the unveiling of Mam’s Books stands out as a remarkable occasion.

Mam’s Books proudly proclaims itself as the sole Asian American book emporium in the Pacific Northwest, representing the first standalone independent bookstore to grace the CID in several decades. The brainchild of Sokha Danh, Mam’s Books bears deep-rooted connections to Seattle’s Asian American community. Danh’s family sought refuge in the United States from Cambodia in 1988, initially settling in Louisiana and later relocating to White Center when Section 8 housing opportunities arose.

In the quest for a suitable location, fate intervened swiftly. Danh secured a 1000-square-foot space at 608 Maynard Ave. S., which he adorned with vibrant colors, christening it “Mam’s Books” in honor of his father. The store’s shelves feature a diverse collection of literary works, encompassing both fiction and nonfiction by Asian American authors in various languages. Additionally, Mam’s Books boasts a section dedicated to CID’s historical publications and a wide array of young adult and children’s literature. To foster a welcoming atmosphere, visitors can also find an assortment of snacks and nonalcoholic beverages available for purchase.

Mam’s Books is emblematic of a new wave of community-driven initiatives, grounded in street-level engagement, dedicated to preserving the rich heritage of the CID while nurturing a future that cherishes the unique qualities of the neighborhood.

For those eager to explore Mam’s Books, it is open on Fridays from 4 to 7 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The bookstore is conveniently located at 608 Maynard Ave. S. in Seattle.
