Residents residing in Will County have voiced their apprehensions and discontent regarding the impending tax levy increment suggested by the Democratic faction within the Will County board.

The potential surge of $548 per $100,000 of property assessment has sparked alarm among residents, prompting a call for a substantial attendance at the forthcoming board meeting scheduled for October 19th at 9:30 am. The meeting will be held at 302 N Chicago St. in Joliet. Tina McGrath, a spokesperson for the county, has disclosed that Will County is contemplating an additional tax increase of approximately $8 million.

The meeting’s agenda encompasses discussions on the ‘Determination of the Estimate of the Annual Aggregate Levy’ and the ‘Estimate Levy for the Community Mental Health Board.’

The Will County Board is currently in the process of estimating the Annual Aggregate Levy for the year 2023 as a component of their budget preparation. This process adheres to legal stipulations and involves proposing specific estimates for approval. The final levy must adhere to the Truth in Taxation Act, and these estimates will serve as the framework for the entire procedure.

The proposed new levy would enhance the county’s revenue to $151,568,664 for the ensuing fiscal year, marking an increase from the $143,509,676 in 2022.

Furthermore, the Will County Board is set to determine their estimate for the 2023 Community Mental Health Board Levy, which will be imposed on real property as per relevant legislation.

This proposed levy, amounting to $10,000,000, forms an integral part of the ongoing budget planning process for the 2024 Will County Budget. Additionally, there is a request for an additional $10 million to establish a new mental health board.
