Tim Walz lambasted over UAW support
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz recently visited the picket line and announced his support for the UAW (United Auto Workers) who are currently embroiled in a battle with Ford over pay and working hours. While this is hardly a revelation that Walz is a fan of the group, it doesn’t mean that this news wasn’t controversial either or open to criticism.
On his Twitter page, Walz wrote this: ‘Our country needs to work for working people. We stand with @UAWmembers as they fight for the pay and benefits they deserve.’ Although this may have landed well with fans of the union, not everyone agreed with his sentiments.
Overall, Walz’s comments gained over 80 comments, with many of them in disagreement with the governor. One user named Garrett Kritsberg wrote: “Seriously? Do you have any idea the effect this will have on the price of cars? What is it a 40% increase in pay and a 32 hour work week? Sounds great when I am paying $100k for a car,” which is the counter-argument to raised wages.
Many others shared this viewpoint, with one adding: “Unions strike for higher wages & win, company then raises prices, consumers lose. The only way the consumer wins is if the company quits being greedy with their profits. We all know the company is not going to do that.”
Clearly, the original Tweet proved to be quite divisive. However, time will tell regarding the legacy of Walz and his run as Minnesota Governor.
