Gretchen Whitmer challenged over Michigan living cost comments

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer recently made comments on her Twitter account regarding the lowering of living costs in Michigan. This revolved around three points, including affordable healthcare, affordable homing, and free breakfasts for children. While this sounded like a good idea, often reality is very different from words.

As a result, her comments were challenged by constituents who didn’t exactly agree with their governor. In full, her Tweet read: ‘When it comes to lowering costs, Michiganders need relief now. We’re helping by providing free breakfast and lunch to our kids, saving parents up to $850 per year. Increasing the supply of affordable housing. Expanding access to affordable healthcare.’

As the saying goes, there’s no such thing as a free lunch. This is what one Twitter user named Luke believed, as he replied saying: “All of these ideas are going to lead to a rise in cost since the taxpayers are going to end up funding these “free” programs.” To his credit, this is a fair point, as in politics and life, the term free is often loaded with a cost coming from elsewhere, such as tax funding.

User Noah James also had a similar comment, as he wrote: “I think you need a better definition of affordable seeing as how things cost far more now than ever. Maybe shrink the size of the bloated administration? Or peg the govt salaries to the state average? That would help a lot. Then you all might feel it too and do something useful.” According to this site, Whitmer’s salary is slightly above the national average.

Overall, it will be interesting to see if these policies are put into reality. Regardless, it looks as though not everyone agrees with Whitmer’s comments.
