In a recent social media post, an El Paso resident posed a question regarding a pair of unusual light poles located in the city. Instead of emitting the standard white light typically associated with street lighting, these poles were casting a distinct blue glow. These were located at North Loop in the Lower Valley.

The query was accompanied by a photograph showcasing this unusual lighting effect, sparking curiosity about whether these lights had been altered or if there was a deliberate reason for their unconventional appearance. Interestingly, a straightforward and logical explanation emerges upon closer examination.

It appears that the issue with these lights is not related to broken glass but rather a gradual fading of the lightbulb’s coloration over time. Essentially, the LED lights are affected by a manufacturing flaw. To achieve their usual bright white illumination, manufacturers typically apply a filter or coating to the bulbs. As time passes, this filter or coating may degrade, leading to peeling or fading.

Consequently, more blue light penetrates through the bulb, resulting in the distinctive purple hue observed in this particular case. This phenomenon is often noticeable in urban areas where extended stretches of roads exhibit a similar problem. This is primarily due to the large quantity of these bulbs that were acquired, and many of them share the same defect. Thus, the mystery is effectively solved.

Nevertheless, the presence of these unique blue-hued lights contributes a distinctive ambiance to the area. It is reasonable to assume that the El Paso authorities will promptly address this issue.
