An image recently went viral that showed the Jolly Roger dive bar in its final days before it gets demolished for good. This showed the venue and iconic sign, that was behind a fence. As seen, the signage also looks very old and worn which is perhaps metaphorical for the decline of Jolly Roger. For several years now, the venue has remained dormant.

Jolly Roger closed a few years back after 60 years of business. Whether you loved it or hated it, you can’t deny that when a store closes after 60 years, it will leave a big hole in the community. The below image was originally shared on Reddit where users reacted to the saddening news of the Jolly Roger’s final days. This leads us to the next point, what is going to replace the old venue?

It turns out that that this will be replaced by new residential apartments, boasting 108 rental units and 170 bicycle parking spots. Interestingly, there don’t appear to be any provisions for car parking, as far as we can discern. Additionally, the development will include shared spaces, namely a courtyard and a rooftop deck.

It remains unclear whether this project will incorporate mixed-use elements, despite the fact that the zoning permits such usage for the parcel. Consequently, it’s uncertain if there will be any commercial activity on the ground floor, but we’ll have to wait and see. This follows the recent Portland trend of various land plots being converted to apartments. However, it is currently unknown when the work will begin. More importantly, it is not known what will happen to the iconic Jolly Roger sign.
