Over the weekend, a Harvard student, going by the Reddit username Benjamin621, garnered attention in early October by embarking on a unique adventure. With just an oar and a colossal 1,000-pound pumpkin in tow, Ben Chang crossed the Charles River.

Chang reached out to the Reddit community, specifically seeking assistance in borrowing a forklift for a very specific purpose. His Reddit post led him to Tim Myra, who generously offered the use of one of his forklifts to facilitate the pumpkin’s transport. Chang wrote: “It is my life’s dream to row a giant pumpkin down the Charles River and I have finally saved up enough money to purchase one, but I just found out from the pumpkin grower that I need a forklift to receive it.”

Once the enormous pumpkin arrived at its final destination, Chang and his friends skillfully carved it, removing all the pumpkin guts. Subsequently, they offered people the opportunity to take turns inside the hollowed-out pumpkin, providing them with an oar and a life vest for safety. This unique experience allowed participants to enjoy spins on the chilly waters of the Charles River.

Dressed in a captain’s hat and a Harvard sweatshirt, the intrepid student successfully sailed the pumpkin across the river, despite its weight, which was comparable to that of a grand piano. While this may not be the best use of your time as a Harvard student, it undoubtedly highlights organization and critical-thinking skills and is probably better than partying and playing video games.
